Press Release
29 April 2024.--10 Billion Solutions announces the start of #ClimateComms Talks, a new series of free webinars aimed at advancing public understanding and improving the discourse around environmental challenges. The first session, titled "Introduction to Climate Change Communications," is scheduled for 7 May 2024. This initiative is part of the broader mission of 10 Billion Solutions to facilitate impactful communication in the field of climate and sustainability.
As the climate crisis worsens, with temperatures rising faster than anticipated, pushing ecosystems and communities to their limits, the need to tackle the causes and impacts of climate change is more urgent than ever. This year is marked by significant milestones in the negotiations governing the international response to the crisis with the next UN Climate Change Conference COP29 taking place in Azerbaijan in November and already ongoing preparations for an even more critical COP30 next year in Brazil.
Both the rapidly evolving physics and the geopolitics around climate change highlight the importance of effective communication around this major challenge for humanity.
The head of UN Climate Change has recently said that humanity only has two years left “to save the world,” while calling for dramatic action to curb greenhouse gas emissions. This dramatic call to the world puts the spotlight on three major milestones to come under the UN-led climate process: first, countries must present their updated climate action plans or NDCs; second, they must also submit their transparency reports under the Paris Agreement’s climate reporting framework; and last but not least, they must agree on a new climate finance target, meaning the amount of money that rich countries must put on the table to help developing nations implement their action plans.
Activating the ‘silent majority’
While a majority of people globally recognizes the urgency of climate change and supports decisive policies, many individuals underestimate this widespread concern. Dr. Hannah Ritchie, Deputy Editor of Our World in Data reports that despite 86% of the global population believing in the necessity of action to avoid a climate catastrophe, there persists a 'perception gap'—a misjudgment of others' attitudes that hinders meaningful climate initiatives.
The #ClimateComms Talks by 10 Billion Solutions are designed to explore this and other complexities around the climate challenge in actionable ways so that effective communications can be leveraged to activate the ‘silent majority’.
The #ClimateComms inaugural webinar will offer an introduction addressing the essentials of climate communications and outlining some winning strategies. The webinar will include a live Q&A session to foster a sharing of experiences.
The session also aims to introduce innovative approaches for enhancing internal and public-facing communications, suitable for diverse audiences including climate professionals, policy makers and technical experts as well as communication experts and journalists.
The session will be led by Mariana Castaño Cano, Founder and CEO of 10 Billion Solutions and an experienced journalist and climate communicator. Her involvement in key processes, including the lead up to the adoption and the implementation of the Paris Agreement, provides her with a unique perspective on the necessity of strategic communication in the climate arena.
The #ClimateTalks free webinar will be held in English and will take place on Tuesday 7 May 2024 at 5-6 pm CEST. Registrations are open here.
